President Xi Jinping has urged high-ranking military officials to lead by example in restoring and upholding the fine traditions of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese armed forces.

Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks on Wednesday as he addressed the opening ceremony of a training session for high-ranking military officials, which was held at the National Defense University in Beijing.

Xi emphasized that the CPC is a Marxist party that always represents the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people and has no special interests of its own. He said that corruption and all ideas or actions of seeking personal gains are completely incompatible with the Party's nature and purpose.

Officials at all levels must consciously put themselves in the right position, stand firmly on the side of the people and overcome selfish ideas that alienate them from the people, he said.

Xi said that high-ranking military officials must take the lead in restoring and carrying forward the fine traditions of the Party and the military, put down official airs and remain true to the identity of revolutionary service personnel, so that corruption and other misconduct could be eliminated in the armed forces.

He noted that everyone is equal before the law, and there are no special cases in the observance of rules and regulations and no exceptions in their enforcement.

Xi said the Party and the military have grown and strengthened through constant struggles against erroneous ideas and misconduct.

He added that under the guidance of the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the armed forces will, with unity and solidarity under new historical conditions, write a new chapter in their march toward a world-class military.

Xi urged the military to deepen its ideological and political rectification, train officers with revolutionary methods, maintain its purity and glory, and greet the centenary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army with a renewed political outlook.

At a meeting with national lawmakers from the armed forces in March, Xi said there should be no place in the military for those disloyal to the Party and no safe haven for corruption, urging the armed forces to unwaveringly advance the anti-corruption campaign.
