MPay Tap! powers Macao’s smart living vision

MPay Tap!, a tap-to-pay service that was launched across Macao by Macao Pass in partnership with Alipay on Monday, offers customers a more convenient payment experience while advancing Macao's digital economy and smart-city development.

Built on Alipay Tap! technology, which combines near-field communication (NFC) and barcode payment capabilities, MPay Tap! provides an instant, one-tap payment experience. Users no longer need to locate a QR code or interrupt phone activities at checkout, making it even more seamless than traditional scan-to-pay.

To encourage adoption, Macao Pass and Alipay have launched an introductory promotion through the end of the year. Users will enjoy an immediate MOP 3 discount on their first MPay Tap! purchase each day, with daily savings available across high-frequency spending scenarios, including shopping and dining.

First launched in January at The Venetian Macao, The Parisian Macao and The Londoner Macao, the service has since expanded to over 1,000 merchants across the city, including restaurants, supermarkets, department stores and major tourist spots such as the Ruins of Saint Paul's, Rua do Cunha and Portas do Cerco.

Gavin Zhao, chief product and technology officer at Macao Pass, said the Macao Special Administrative Region government's commitment to innovation and smart-city development has created fertile ground for technologies such as MPay Tap!. "Macao Pass is dedicated to injecting fresh momentum into Macao's smart living vision and community economy," he added.

Moreover, MPay Tap! terminal supports both Alipay Tap! and conventional QR payments, serving the needs of residents and tourists. The devices also accept more than ten international digital wallets, further reflecting Macao's growing role as a global tourism hub.

"Working with Macao Pass, we are pleased to bring these benefits to residents and merchants in Macao. As the service extends to more scenarios, it will enhance digital connectivity across the Greater Bay Area and become an important driver of the region's integrated development," said Li Jiajia, vice-president and co-president of the Payment Business Group at Ant Group.
