Transcendence on the trampoline, what I learned at the gym

I was doing lazy bounces on a mini trampoline to the beat of music blaring from speakers in the four corners of the training studio at the gym.

Full of enthusiasm, the trainer shouted instructions while energetically demonstrating each movement.

But I blocked it all out, surrendering to the weariness and soul-depleting stupor after a long, demanding day.

I started my morning texting my interviewee, hoping for a response, but none came. Then, my taxi got involved in an accident on my way home, leaving me in the middle of nowhere. By the time I made it to the gym at 8:27 pm — three minutes before class began — all the good spots and trampolines had been taken. I was left with a broken one missing a spring, crammed into a corner by the window. The series of setbacks had left me feeling defeated. My arms weren't extending as far as they were supposed to, my core was slack, and my knees felt like they were about to fall asleep.

I knew I must have looked like a tired, listless soul, a stark contrast to the energy radiating from everyone else in the room. My inner voice justified my lethargy as a personal matter — it was my problem, no one else's — but deep down, I knew I was slipping into a self-pitying, negative attitude that I had no right to project onto others.

Then, I crossed the line. I grabbed my phone and started checking messages and browsing grocery apps. For three minutes, I half-heartedly went through the motions. The session's first phase came to an end, and the coach spoke softly through the microphone during the interval. She gently cautioned us to concentrate on the trampoline, to avoid injury from tripping or falling. Then, in a light but reserved tone, she said, "Try to enjoy the class, because your energy directly reaches me, influencing mine. Let's pull it together, shall we?"

There was no reproach in her voice, just a calm, caring request. But it hit me like a jolt. I realized I had been the odd one out. My earlier attitude — the distractions, the lack of engagement — had not only hurt my own experience, but had subtly pulled down the energy in the room.

This was a wake-up call.

I have always prided myself on being a dedicated gym-goer, a positive presence in the class. When others were hesitant to take the front spot, I would step up, giving it my all, building my stamina, and earning the respect of the coaches. But here I was, lost in frustration, blind to the effect it was having on those around me.

My renewed awareness led me to put down my phone, straighten my posture, and take my jumping up a notch. I made eye contact with the coach, who nodded back, and I matched her pace, pushing myself through the rest of the session with a sense of purpose. By the end, drenched in sweat, I felt the weight of the day lift off my shoulders. Negative emotions melted away, and I even forgot why I'd been upset in the first place.

This small but powerful epiphany made me realize how much we can benefit from acknowledging the care and concerns of others. In the past, I thought my moments of frustration were private, something I should handle alone. I believed my feelings and struggles were solely mine to bear, but that mindset only prolonged my suffering, deepening the negativity and, in turn, influencing those around me in ways I hadn't considered.

Thank goodness for the coach's timely intervention. Her gentle nudge brought me back from the edge, quickened my healing process, and gave me the space to realign with a more positive mindset.

Some might say my reaction was too self-conscious, especially in today's world, where the prevailing philosophy encourages one to follow one's heart and instincts without worrying too much about the opinions of others. While this can feel liberating, it sometimes leads to misunderstanding, isolation, or even reckless decisions, as negative emotions cloud our judgment.

As I smiled at the coach, she returned it, her smile conveying silent appreciation for my efforts to get back on track. The lingering discomfort I felt dissipated.

Later that evening, when I checked my phone, I saw a message from my interviewee, signaling a fresh, promising start for the next day's work. Everything seemed to fall into place and I felt a profound sense of clarity.

In the end, it wasn't just the workout that revived me; it was the reminder that connecting with others and being aware of their concerns is, in fact, a way of nurturing ourselves.
