Renowned Hong Kong actress Kathy Chow Hoi-mei passed away on Monday after a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness. The news of her untimely demise was confirmed by her studio in a somber announcement on Tuesday evening, bringing an end to a day of speculation and rumors surrounding her health.

The 57-year-old actress, who had celebrated her birthday on Dec 6, shared a heartfelt video on social media on Wednesday, expressing gratitude for the wishes and support she had received.

However, on Monday evening, rumors began to circulate about her sudden demise, causing a stir among her fans and the wider online community.

Despite attempts by industry insiders to dispel the rumors and reassure the public that Chow was receiving medical treatment, the original sources of the news were quietly removed, leaving her fans in a state of uncertainty. It was not until Tuesday evening that Chow's studio officially confirmed the heartbreaking news.

Throughout her illustrious career, Chow captivated audiences with her talent and charisma, both in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. She was a frequent guest in interviews with mainland media, where she shared her aspirations of slowing down her work and embracing a more tranquil lifestyle.

Born 6 December 1966 in Hong Kong, Chow made her debut as an entertainer after losing the Miss Hong Kong pageant contest in 1985. As an actress, model and singer, Chow was widely known for various roles in TVB series during the late 1980s to 1990s, including Zhou Zhiruo in the wuxia novel The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber by Louis Cha Leung-yung, which propelled her to greater success and put her on the road to superstardom. She has also played roles in a range of classic film and television productions, including The Feud of Two Brothers (1986), Looking Back in Anger (1989), Fight Back to School III (1993).

In 2003, Chow relocated from Hong Kong to Beijing for new career opportunities. While occasionally starring in some TVB series, Chow focused on productions on the Chinese mainland, including drama series and reality TV shows.

Reports had previously surfaced suggesting that she was battling the autoimmune disease lupus, which had reportedly impacted her professional endeavors.

Chow's untimely passing has left a void in the entertainment industry, as colleagues, friends, and fans have paid tribute on social media to her remarkable contributions to the world of cinema. Her legacy as a talented actress and her enduring spirit will continue to inspire future generations in the realm of the performing arts.
