South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday the country is looking to Chinese cooperation to tackle the pandemic, recover from it and reset the economy.

Ramaphosa made the remarks while giving a virtual address on the Chinese New Year, which will be celebrated in South Africa on Feb 1. The tiger, which symbolizes strength, bravery and independence, is the upcoming lunar year's animal mascot.

Ramaphosa said this year the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and South Africa should result in "mutual economic growth, development and common prosperity" for the two countries, the region and the world.

"South Africa is grateful to the People's Republic of China for its support throughout the pandemic, and particularly for working to ensure Africa has greater access to COVID-19 vaccines. There is a wise African proverb that says 'if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go further, go together.' May the friendship between South Africa and the People's Republic of China endure and may we face this new year with courage, strength and hope," Ramaphosa said.

He mentioned the country will focus on ending COVID-19, create jobs, reduce inequality and revive the economy this year.

Minister of Arts and Culture Nkosinathi Mthethwa said the two countries share common interest in improving people-to-people relations, economic development and cultural exchanges. He said despite the setbacks brought by COVID-19, South Africa would like to see the implementation of the cultural relations agreements which they signed.

Mthethwa said: "I would like to express appreciation for China for the professional manner in which you have conducted business since the beginning of our diplomatic relations. Let us not forget the Beijing Winter Olympic Games which should strengthen relations with the Peoples' Republic of China for the foreseeable future."

Chen Xiaodong, Chinese ambassador to South Africa, wished for relations between the two countries to "flourish and bear more fruits". He said the comprehensive strategic partnership between our two countries continues to develop, even during the pandemic.
