Carbon emissions peak, carbon neutrality and building an ecological civilization will be the Chinese business community's goals when participating in global climate governance in the coming years, an executive said.

Zhu Guangchao, deputy chief engineer and director of the international cooperation department of the State Grid Corporation of China, said environmental protection and energy transformation are both global issues, and the international community should come together to promote climate and ecological governance.

In line with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, actions consistent with the national circumstances of developing countries should be taken, he said at the Eco Forum Global Guiyang 2021 held in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, earlier this month.

In his speech, he shared State Grid's efforts in contributing to global climate governance. As a centrally administered State-owned enterprise with serious considerations of national economy and energy security, the group is keen to support global climate governance and has been actively joining the process.

This year, State Grid Chairman Xin Baoan is also co-chair of B20 Italy's Energy and Resource Efficiency Task Force. Joined by his team, they firmly advocated China's position on climate and related subjects on behalf of the business community.

With China setting a target to combat climate change by speeding up reductions in emissions to reach carbon neutrality before 2060, Zhu said the company has released its first corporate action plan nationwide and promoted the establishment of a power system based on new energy.

"State Grid prioritizes grid construction and technical progress to serve the development of new energy, commits to electrification and digitalization and leverages technological strengths to serve green development of the Belt and Road Initiative," he added.
