With the reform and opening-up, hair salons became a symbol of openness and fashion in Beijing. Prior to the emergence of new-style hair salons, old Beijingers went to barber shops to get a haircut. Only a few barber shops offered perms for women, and sometimes certificates were required.
Nowadays, hair salons of different levels and price can be seen on the street, and the old-style barber shops are nowhere to be found.
