Banking remains the most profitable sector in China, and majority of the top 10 Chinese companies earning the most were banks this year, the People's Daily reported.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Agricultural Bank of China secured the top three spots with gains of 286.05 billion yuan ($41.28 billion), 242.26 billion yuan and 192.96 billion yuan, respectively.

Among the top 500 Chinese enterprises this year, according to the newspaper, banks contributed 43.4 percent of the total profit, though in sheer numbers they were just 3.4 percent.
