In 2017, the most preferred lipstick color for many Chinese women was a special shade of red, similar to the color of red bean paste.

Estee Lauder's Envy Lipstick, Rebellious Rose (420) became popular due to its use by model Liu Wen. This red shade of lipstick was nicknamed "the color of Cousin Liu", for the model was called Cousin Liu by her Chinese fans.

More celebrities are opting for a much warmer shade, or the "pumpkin color", refering to a range of orange tones similar to those found in the family of pumpkins.

The warm hue gives a touch of sunlight to the lips during cold seasons, and is also a good match for the skin tones of Asian women.
