Advisors' proposal on govt.efficiency, mainland-Taiwan ties and Olympics(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-03-13 13:43 Chinese political advisors attending their annual session here in Beijing on Monday tabled their proposals on issues concerning government efficiency, mainland-Taiwan relations, rural women's status and other social problems. It's an imperative task to build a frugal government as China's administration fees are increasing at an appalling speed, said Feng Pei'en at the fourth plenary meeting of the annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body. He called to enact a law on the government's information release system, improve the assessment mechanism of local officials' performance and tighten restrictions on budget, so as to stem waste by governments of various levels. Zhu Peikang, a CPPCC National Committee member from the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, suggested exchanges and cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan be further expanded and deepened based on the theme of peace and development. "We should firmly smash Taiwan authorities' evil attempts to seek 'de jure independence' and try our best to maintain peaceful development of mainland-Taiwan relations," Zhu said. Xu Deming, who delivered a speech representing the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, said that social security, economic subsidy and other related problems shall be settled properly to protect the rights and interests of laid-off workers. Zhao Shaohua, a CPPCC National Committee member from the All- China Women's Federation, said that rural women are still treated unfairly in participation in local political affairs, education and training as well as health care. Decision-makers of various levels should further improve their awareness of gender equality, pay attention to women's special interests in their development and adopt unbiased public policies and services for women, Zhao said. CPPCC member Ye Hongming considered it necessary to deepen reforms on film industry's management system, encourage diversified productions and revive movie markets in rural areas. Deng Yaping, Olympic table tennis gold medalist, said that Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 will provide a good opportunity for China to shape its international image. "So it's important not only to improve the infrastructure and facilities of the city, but also to enhance people's ethics and manners," she said.
